How Scam Works?

This chat is made up. It shows how the trick usually sounds. It is not a real message. Do not reply, and do not send money.

Demonstration

Phone call, then a UPI request

UPI help desk

  1. Scam message

Your UPI is about to close. I have sent a request. Approve it and enter the PIN to receive ₹1 back. That will keep the account open.

  2. What you might say

Why do I enter a PIN to receive money?

  3. Scam message

It is only a test of ₹1. Do it now. Do not call your branch.

You do not enter your UPI PIN to receive money. A PIN means you are paying.

  1. 01

They give a reason to act fast

KYC, a failed payment, a cashback, or a refund. Sometimes a QR code at a shop has been swapped.

  2. 02

You are asked to approve or share the screen

Approving a collect request, scanning a refund QR, or sharing your screen lets them move money.

  3. 03

    The PIN finishes the payment

Read the name on the UPI screen before you type anything. If the name is wrong, cancel it.
