Online and Social Media Related Crime

Cheating by Impersonation

Someone pretends to be a person or office you trust. Then they ask for money, a code, or your documents.

How Scam Works?

This chat is made up. It shows how the trick usually sounds. It is not a real message. Do not reply, and do not send money.

Demonstration

Phone call

Unknown number, saved as “Bank support”

  1. Scam message

This is your bank. Your account has a problem. I will fix it on this call. Do not hang up.

  2. What you might say

I will call the number on my card.

  3. Scam message

That line is busy. Stay with me and share the code I just sent, or the account will lock.

A real bank, police station, or office can wait while you call them back on a number you already trust.

  1. 01

    They borrow a trusted name

A call, SMS, or WhatsApp message looks like it is from your bank, the police, a courier, or someone at work.

  2. 02

    They create fear

They say something bad will happen today if you do not act. They do not want you to check with anyone else.

  3. 03

They ask for the dangerous thing

The ask is money, a one-time code, a password, or a copy of your ID. That is the trick.
