Digital arrest calls that pretend to be the police

Police in India do not arrest you on a video call or ask you to move money into a safe account.

The caller says they are from the police, CBI, Customs, or a narcotics team. They may know your name or part of an Aadhaar number. They say a parcel in your name contained something illegal, or that your account is linked to a crime. They keep you on a video call for hours and tell you not to speak to your family.

What a real arrest is not

  • It is not a video call you must not hang up.

  • It is not a transfer into a “safe account” so your money can be checked.

  • It is not a demand to stay silent, or a threat that calling your family will make the case worse.

  • A room that looks like an office, a uniform, or a document on screen can all be staged. None of that is an arrest.

What to do on the call

  1. Hang up. You are allowed to put the phone down.

  2. Call a family member on a number you already have, and say you were told not to.

  3. Do not install an app they name, and do not move money.

  4. If money has already moved, call 1930 and your bank. Keep the number that called you.

If money has already left your account, call 1930 or report at cybercrime.gov.in. This page is awareness information. It does not file a complaint.
